Elizabethan and Jacobean portraits were fine examples of the emerging art of representation which burgeoned in England and on the European continent from 1500 onwards. Very often, the artist is unknown given the distance in time and the poor cataloguing of the day. However, the portraits of this early period convey a freshness and naivety combined with an elegance of style and technique.
