Emma Jeffryes (b. 1967) is a young artist living in
Cornwall. She studied painting and textiles at Middlesex University in England and at the
Royal College of Arts from 1992-1994. She subsequently worked with Helen Yardley and Group
4 in New York, as well as freelance design work for a number of fabric design companies.
Although trained as a textile designer, painting is of great importance to her both in its
own rights and as a source of inspiration for her textile designs. She is greatly
influenced by the sea and has become particularly drawn to St. Ives in Cornwall. Emma
works mainly with acrylic on paper, working directly from life, be it from a cliff top or
in amongst the boats in the harbour. She makes an immediate response to her surroundings
which, she feels, maintains a certain freshness to the work. Her work is characterised by
vivid colours and a strong sense of space in both her landscapes and still lifes.
