Reg Cartwright was born in Leicester in 1938 and was was
educated at Gateway Boy's School before National Service as a musician with the Leicester
Regiment. After thsi he worked in various studios as a commercial artist and Art Director
for 13 years. In 1974 REg became a full-time painter and illustrator and since then awards
have included the 'Mother Goose Award' for the most promising new illustrator (Mr.
Potter's Pigeon), and the MSIA for illustration and graphics. In 1996 Reg created his
first screenprint which was published by Art House Editions.
During 1997 Reg's book "The Boat of Many Rooms" was published by Simon &
Schuster, New York. The artwork from this book was greatly admired and selected for
inclusion in an exhibition entitled "The Original Show" at the Museum of 20th
Century Illustration in New York. Reg's work has an affinity with the St. Ives School, and
he is continuing in the tradition of British Modernism. He uses familiar objects as a
pretext for examining complex spatial relationships. His use of flattened persepective, a
range of muted to bright colours and a strong wit all contribute to the vision his
paintings convey.
Reg Carwright has exhibited at the Portal Gallery, the Picadilly Gallery and King Street
Gallery in London, and a number of other galleries in the UK.
