Elsmore and Forster
Elsmore & Forster pottery was a significant part of the Staffordshire Potteries, a center of ceramic production in the late seventeenth century. The firm operated between 1853 and 1871 and specialized in large glazed earthenware jugs, often decorated with popular entertainment motifs. They were known for their use of hand-painted lustre-glazed transfer prints and had a reputation for producing high-quality, well-decorated pottery. The firm's designs were often inspired by contemporary culture and events, reflecting the tastes and interests of the time.
The original partnership was between Thomas Elsmore, Thomas Forster and Richard Blackhurst trading as Elsmore, Forster & Co.
Blackhurst left the partnership in 1855 and Elsmore & Forster continued in business together.
Around 1871 Forster left the business and Thomas Elsmore continued as Elsmore & Son.
