Beautiful Mug in excellent condition with inscription
"When this you see remember me
And bear me in your mind
Let all the world
Say what they will
Speak of me as you find"
This is a lovely example of an early– to mid-19th-century English “presentation” or “posy” mug—these were popular as small gifts between about 1820 and 1860, often bearing floral painting and sentimental inscriptions such as “A Present for a Friend,” “Remember Me,” or “Love and Friendship.”
? Date
The shape (cylindrical body with a turned foot and pronounced upper rim),
Hand-painted floral sprigs with gilded bands, and
The looped handle with a thumb spur and small upper knop
all point to production roughly 1835–1855.
? Place of manufacture
This style was very typical of Staffordshire potteries, especially in the Hanley / Longton / Burslem area.
Similar mugs were made by firms such as Charles Meigh, Samuel Alcock, E. J. Ridgway, and Davenport.
The decoration was usually done by local decorators—each workshop sold blanks to painters who hand-enameled floral designs before the final firing.
⚒️ Technique & body
The mug is made of earthenware (creamware or early pearlware), glazed and then over-painted with enamels and gilt.
The gold banding and painted bouquet indicate it was not a mass pub mug but a sentimental gift piece, perhaps for a friend or family member.
